There is dignity in work - something to be said for the sense of accomplishment one feels upon a job well done. Increasingly, people with developmental disabilities are finding places in a variety of fields including food services, retail establishments and offices within the county. The key to successful employment lies in job training and appropriate job placement. At ARC of Rockland, we help people succeed in the world of work.
Enclave Employment
Under the supervision of an ARC staff person, a group (enclave) of people works on-location at one of several Rockland County based companies. The enclave work-site requires that workers be proficient in the production or packaging of items specific to that industry. The ARC enclave supervisor serves as a liaison between the manager of the particular company and the enclave employees.
Supported Employment
From the job interview forward, ARC is on-hand to help people find employment in the competitive job market. Job counselors assess each individual's skills and capabilities and assist the person in selecting an appropriate career choice. From the initial application through the through the hiring process and employment, including job coaching, ARC remains in the picture to ensure a successful employment experience.
Independent Employment
ARC career counselors answer questions and discuss employment issues with individuals with developmental disabilities who are employed independently by business or industry in the county. Career counselors work with the employer and the employee to help create the best possible working environment.
Job Coaching
The job coach serves as liaison with the business or industry and the employee. The job coach learns the job along with the employee and sees to it that the employee understands the work at hand. Initially a job coach may work side-by-side with the new employee on a full time basis. As the employee becomes more confident, the need for job coaching will diminish.

Pre-Vocational Training
During the transition from high school to the adult world, or when moving from one type of job to another, ARC's pre-vocational training gives people an opportunity to hone skills and consider possible employment options. With the Congers based ARC Enterprises as its headquarters, young men and women learn the ropes of employment in a full-service packaging and fulfillment industry. Oversight, assessment of skills and feedback from the employee-in-training enable ARC to prepare a person for his or her entrance into the working world.
Employment Counseling
Whether it concerns the interview process, completing a job application, a desired career change, salaries or questions about co-workers or supervisors, ARC employment counselors meet regularly with persons employed by ARC Enterprises or elsewhere in the county to help ensure a smooth employment experience. |
