Respite

It is a break from the routine, the time we require to refuel and reenergize. For some, respite means down time. For others, it’s the time it takes to accomplish items on a to do list. Whether it is an hour a day, a few days a week or a few weeks a year, for families of loved ones with disabilities, respite is a necessary reprieve from the demanding challenges of daily life.

Children's Respite

Our charming Children's Respite Home is just the right size to accommodate three or four children at a time. There is a swing set on the lawn, shelves filled with children’s books, blocks, puzzles and plenty of other toys, new friends and tasty meals—all under the supervision of skilled, caring professional staff members. Parents will feel comfortable leaving their sons and daughters ages 3-16 after school, overnight or for a few days or a week. This cheerful, safe and loving home-away-from-home features a glatt kosher kitchen.

Vacation Respite
Three times yearly during winter, spring and summer vacations from school, two programs, one for young children and one for teens, offer a range of activities. Boys and girls, ages 5-12, enjoy an array of supervised games, crafts projects, sports and special events while their regular school is closed for vacation. Vacation Respite is available Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at ARC of Rockland’s Prime Time for Kids Learning Center in New City, NY. Participants meet at Prime Time and head out for a day of fun. Destinations may include lunch at a local restaurant, bowling, trips to area museums, movies, ceramics classes, miniature golf—good times with good friends!
Adult Overnight Respite
Your adult child, age 15 and over, will enjoy his or her stay in this lovely, safe apartment. Nutritious, delicious meals and recreational activities within the community are part of the overall experience. Families can attend to medical needs, take a vacation, travel for business or spend time out of town with the knowledge that their loved one is in caring and competent hands. One other great reason to visit the respite apartment for several days or a week is the chance to learn how it feels to live away from home.
In-Home Respite
In this harried, hurried world, it seems there is never enough time to get everything done. An ARC trained professional will provide respite at the family home giving parents/full-time caregivers a chance to help other children with homework or drive them to various after school activities, respond to e-mails, cook a meal, head for the supermarket, visit doctors or dentists, or drive other family members to medical appointments—all with the knowledge that their loved one is in capable hands.
Intensive Respite
A skilled professional provides one-on-one care to an adult spending time in ARC’s Adult Respite Home or to a child spending time in ARC’s Children’s Respite Home. Intensive Respite is available to people with both intellectual or other developmental disabilities and serious physical or behavioral challenges.
