ARC Of Rockland – Respite for Individuals with Intellectual & Other Developmental Disabilities.

Respite

It is a break from the routine, the time we require to refuel and reenergize. For some, respite means down time. For others, it’s the time it takes to accomplish items on a to do list. Whether it is an hour a day, a few days a week or a few weeks a year, for families of loved ones with disabilities, respite is a necessary reprieve from the demanding challenges of daily life.

Children's Respite

Our charming Children's Respite Home is just the right size to accommodate three or four children at a time. There is a swing set on the lawn, shelves filled with children’s books, blocks, puzzles and plenty of other toys, new friends and tasty meals—all under the supervision of skilled, caring professional staff members. Parents will feel comfortable leaving their sons and daughters ages 3-16 after school, overnight or for a few days or a week. This cheerful, safe and loving home-away-from-home features a glatt kosher kitchen.

Prime Time Plus +++ Vacation Respite
Available to children ages 5 through 12 with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, this program takes place three times a year during regular school vacations—winter and spring school vacations and two weeks at the end of summer. A boon to working parents and a joy to children, Prime Time Plus features games, crafts, sports and special events. There is no cost to families, eligible children not affiliated with ARC of Rockland are also welcome.
School Vacation Teen Travelers
When school is out, the fun begins. Five days of action and activities take place three times yearly during school vacations. Participants ages 12-21 meet at ARC’s Prime Time for Kids Learning Center before heading out for sites similar to those enjoyed by weekend Teen Travelers. There is always a stop for lunch at a local restaurant where teens find time to dine and socialize.
Adult Overnight Respite
Your adult child, age 15 and over, will enjoy his or her stay in this lovely, safe apartment. Nutritious, delicious meals and recreational activities within the community are part of the overall experience. Families can attend to medical needs, take a vacation, travel for business or spend time out of town with the knowledge that their loved one is in caring and competent hands. One other great reason to visit the respite apartment for several days or a week is the chance to learn how it feels to live away from home.
In-Home Respite
In this harried, hurried world, it seems there is never enough time to get everything done. An ARC trained professional will provide respite at the family home giving parents/full-time caregivers a chance to help other children with homework or drive them to various after school activities, respond to e-mails, cook a meal, head for the supermarket, visit doctors or dentists, or drive other family members to medical appointments—all with the knowledge that their loved one is in capable hands.
Intensive Respite
Every family needs a break from their routine. This may be especially so for families who care for a child or adult with extremely serious disabilities at home. Designed for children and adults ages three years and up, with severe behavior and/or physical challenges, Intensive Respite provides professional, one-on-one, ’round the clock care at ARC of Rockland’s Adult Respite Home or at ARC of Rockland’s Children’s Respite Home.

To be eligible for this service, individuals must be Rockland County residents with intellectual or other developmental disabilities living at home with their families, be approved for services through the OPWDD (Office for People with Developmental Disabilities) and must require one-to-one supervision due to physical and/or severe behavioral conditions. The Intensive Respite care giver will receive the appropriate training regarding the individual’s needs, routines and activities including the dispensation of medications. Intensive Respite will allow families the peace of mind necessary to take time away from the sometimes overwhelming responsibilities of care giving.
